Primordial House

Residential Duplex | Lafayette Louisiana

Primordial House is a new-construction, wood-framed duplex apartment located in Lafayette’s historic and vibrant Fightinville neighborhood near downtown. The project was driven by a dual purpose: to elevate the multi-family living experience while remaining deeply respectful of an established residential fabric.

Fitting In

Rather than imposing an alien scale on the streetscape, the building employs common neighborhood geometries that soften its massing and mask the size difference between the duplex and surrounding single-family homes. Its material palette is intentionally restrained—strictly limited to materials common to Fightin'ville and visible directly from the site.

Standing Out

While the materials are contextual, their application is elevated through smart design principles and precise detailing, maximizing both building resilience and long-term sustainability:

  • Volumetric & Spatial Efficiency: The floor plans are designed for maximum spatial efficiency, fitting rich living programs into a compact footprint. Room volumes are considered in three dimensions so spaces feel noticeably larger, brighter, and more comfortable than comparable square footage in the area.

  • Acoustic & Visual Privacy: Privacy between units is handled rigorously. Entrances are separated to create individual, secure approach sequences for each tenant. Inside, layout logic places "quiet spaces" along the sound-attenuated party wall, ensuring superior acoustic isolation between residences.
